Usdaw is one of Britain's largest trade unions with over 400,000 members nationwide.
Usdaw members work in a variety of occupations and industries including: shopworkers, factory and warehouse workers, drivers, call centres, clerical workers, insurance agents, milkround and dairy process, butchers and meat packers, catering, laundries, chemical processing, home shopping and pharmaceutical.
Most of our members work in retail and we are keen to ensure that LGBT members in retail see Usdaw as their natural home. We are the UK's fourth largest trade union and provide advice, support and representation to our members.
We want to ensure that -
- LGBT members are visible and active in the Union so that other LGBT members see themselves reflected in our structures.
- LGBT members have a voice so that we can hear first hand what issues are important to them.
- We act on those issues and try to make a difference by working with employers and lobbying politicians.
We do this in the following ways -
- We have equalities forums including in Scotland with reserved seats for LGBT members.
- Organising local get-togethers of LGBT members on issues such as tackling homophobia, transphobia and biphobia at work.
- Bringing LGBT members together to look at obstacles to their greater involvement in the Union.
- Having a strong Usdaw presence at Pride festivals so we are taking the Union out to LGBT people and not sitting back waiting for them to come to us.
- Providing advice and representation to LGBT members facing bullying, harassment or other unfair treatment at work.
