Moving Abroad - All Questions
Q.
My partner and I wish to move abroad. How might our legal relationship status change?
A.
Many other countries besides the UK offer some partner benefits to same-sex couples who live together for a certain period of time.
However, these may apply only when you have been living together for the required period of time in that country: evidence that you have been loging together outside that country may not be acceped.
Always check the current legal status of same-sex relationships in the country you intend to live in. The International Lesbian and Gay Association (www.ilga.org) should be able to provide you with up-to-date information.

Q.
I'm not a UK citizen, but my partner is. Will this affect my entering the UK?
A.
You may be able to get leave to enter the UK if you have been living together with someone, if you meet the conditions laid down by the Home Office. These conditions include;
- You are not married or in a civil partnership with anyone else (or, if you are, you can show that this relationship has irretrievable broken down).
- You have been living together for two to four years.
Always get advice before taking any action. For official information ask the Border and Immigration Agency (www.bia.homeoffice.gov.uk, 0870 606 7766); the UK Lesbian & Gay Immigration Group (www.uklgig.org.uk, 020 7922 7811) provides limited free advice; or ask a solicitor who will advise with regard to immigration and nationality.
