Seminar Two: Place/Space - Global/Local

Building on the opening seminar this seminar will critically examine the significance of place and space to LGBT identities.

Held 12 May 2009

The organisers would like to invite papers on theory, methods and applied research, including work in progress, of relevance to the seminar theme as well as papers detailing development projects, campaigns and other aspects of practice relating to the LGBT communities. Presentations which address the Scottish context in some respect are particularly welcome. This seminar is concerned with questions of space, including the way that space mediates relations and identities. We also wish to consider the significance of local cultures to LGBT identities alongside issues of a more global nature that transcend national boundaries.

Themes will include:

  • Social networks and relations across time and place
  • Critical perspectives on the notion of community
  • Constructions and negotiation of identities at particular points in time and place
  • Transnational issues and questions associated with sexuality and gender dissidence
  • Innovative approaches to investigating LGBT issues at a local level and on a global scale
  • Actual/virtual/discursive spaces

We invite abstracts for presentations that will be 20 minutes in length. When submitting your abstract please provide the following information: title of your presentation; the author, organisation and e-mail address of presenter/s; and a summary of the proposed presentation using a maximum of 250 words. Please send abstracts for consideration to the seminar series administrator: Janice Burr at jburr@qmu.ac.uk Closing date 6 April 2009. This closing date is past.
