Call for papers for Seminar Three

Call for papers for Seminar Three: Bodies, embodiment and bodily practices

Venue: Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen
Date: October 23rd 2009

The organisers would like to invite papers on theory, methods and applied research, including work in progress, of relevance to the seminar theme as well as papers detailing development projects, campaigns and other aspects of practice relating to the LGBT communities. Presentations which address the Scottish context in some respect are particularly welcome. This seminar is concerned with how sexuality and gender identity might be explored through a focus on the body and embodied identities and will have a particular focus on trans identities and issues.

Themes may include:

  • Transgendered embodiment and body-related negotiations and exchanges with therapists and medical practitioners
  • Innovative approaches to engaging with issues of image and the body through performance and the arts
  • Questions of heteronormativity in relation to disability, ageing and gender
  • Formal and informal networks of support, help and care within LGBT communities

We invite abstracts for presentations that will be 20 minutes in length.  When submitting your abstract please provide the following information: title of your presentation; the author, organisation and e-mail address of presenter/s; and a summary of the proposed presentation using a maximum of 250 words. Please send abstracts for consideration to the seminar series convener: Richard Ward at Richard.Ward@manchester.ac.uk

The organisers are able to meet the travel and accommodation costs of up to 5 UK-based postgraduates per seminar and will meet the expenses (up to £200) of one international postgraduate per seminar. Selection will be based on the relevance of proposed papers to the seminar theme. Please indicate on your abstract if you wish to be considered for funding.
