Cracks - Film Review

A story of love, obsession and exploitation at an isolated girls' school in the 1930s, this beautifully photographed film is the first feature by Ridley Scott's daughter Jordan.

It's a superb piece of work which will be enjoyed by anyone with an interested in well-crafted film drama, but it has particular appeal to lesbians and bisexual women. Its focus is the school diving team, whose members are almost all besotted with the striking and glamorous teacher Miss G, but when a new student arrives at the school and Miss G's attention shifts to her, jealousies form.

As the teacher is a deeply flawed character the story soon becomes sinister and some people may be uncomfortable with seeing a lesbian character of this type, but the film is deliberately (and cleverly) playing wth our sympathies. A younger lesbian character, initially unpleasant, ends up rebalancing the story as she learns more about herself and about the adult world. Highly recommended.

Opens in UK 4th December 2009
